Abstract

The article is devoted to the analysis of the potential of professional dynasties in medicine through the eyes of non-dynastic physicians. In the spring – summer of 2021, a sociological study was conducted using in-depth interviews with non-dynastic physicians and a mass questionnaire survey with representatives of the medical community in major Russian cities (Moscow, Rostov-on-Don, Saratov). Having a wide spread in social practices, professional dynasticity in medicine has a dual potential. The results of the study showed that non-dynastic physicians, as well as representatives of dynasties, mostly positively characterize professional dynasties and see the main advantages in the transfer of experience and knowledge, the transmission of family labor traditions and mentoring. Among the negative aspects of professional dynasticity are coercion to choose a profession, protectionism and the creation of barriers to the competitive development of non-dynastic physicians. This was the reason for the reluctance of non-dynastic physicians to their children to become doctors, but the willingness to support them in choosing if they themselves want to become doctors. Thus, expressing the intention to support their children in choosing a medical profession, non-dynastic doctors reinforce their positive attitude to the continuation of family professional traditions.
