The article examines the main stages of the Macedonian nation-building, its symbolic and historical aspects. The young state located on the territory with a rich historical past, had difficulties for many years with the use of its ancient Macedonian heritage, since this led to a confrontation with Greece and, as a result, to problems in the international arena. In the process of searching for a symbolic compromise, the young state was renamed to North Macedonia. This resolved the tension between the two countries and led to the final formation of the Macedonian nation.Keywords:nation-building; symbolic politics; post-Yugoslavia; North Macedonia; GreeceAuthor Biographies
