Abstract
The article examines the social and the economic situation in the Nizhny Novgorod region on the eve of the new economic policy (NEP). The author pays attention to the situation in the agriculture and industry of the Nizhny Novgorod region, analyses the place of the Nizhny Novgorod region in the Russian economy. The reasons that led the industry, agriculture, crafts and social relations in the Nizhny Novgorod region on the threshold of crisis are also analyzed in the article. The author also compares the situation in the province before the World War I with the social and the economical situation in the region at the beginning of 1921. The most urgent tasks that should be solved by the local authority during the period of the NEP are also examined by the author.
