Abstract

In the article the issue of mechanisms, which determine correlation of power/might and threat perception, is under discussion through the context of the theory of state image. The author argues that threat perception is connected not only with the absolute indicators of might and power, but with its dynamic features which are revealed in the result of comparison of political values and status positions, reflected in the mutual images of states. In particular, perception of threat is based on the value differences and divergence of the principles of functioning of political institutions of interacting states. Besides, the subject comes to the conclusion about the existence of threat if the state performs actions, which result in strengthening its position on the international arena and/or weakening status of its interaction partner.
