Abstract
In the article the author refers to the problem of the coexistence of traditional and non-traditional religions using the example of the Transbaikal spiritual mission in the second half of 19th – early 20th centuries which aim was to combat followers of so-called Russian sects, such as Molokans, Doukhobors, Skopsty (eunuchs), Hristovery (whips), Ioannits, as well as western origin sects, such as Baptists, Adventists, Pentecostals, with which missionaries first encountered in the analyzed period. As a source base the author used archival documents and the papers of the Transbaikal Orthodox missionaries devoted to the theme of sects. In addition, the paper presents a number of little-known facts about the religious life in the Western Transbaikal region in the prerevolutionary period. Finally the author noted the need for a differentiated approach to the problem of the inter-religious cooperation.
