Abstract
The article reveals the author's interpretation of existing conceptual approaches to the phenomenon of nationalism. The practice of nation-building as a form of interethnic cooperation at the regional level is analyzed. Ethnic and cultural diversity is considered as a social and political challenge. Arguments in favor of formation of the civil nation in Russia as the most appropriate formula for nation-building considering Russian multi-ethnicity, poly-confessional, size of its territory and increasing external migration processes, are given in the article.
