Abstract

This article explores the opposition in the Bolshevik party that struggled for a democratization of intra-party regime in the period of 1923–1924. Traditional political historical science is focused on the struggle for power at the top, giving special attention to the Trotsky-Stalin confrontation. This article offers a history from below, exploring opposition of rank-and-file student-communists in Petrograd, where common support for the opposition was low from the very beginning. Based on the case studies of support for the opposition in several higher educational institutions the author concludes that the main factor contributed to oppositional activity was Trotsky’s authority, even though being in the opposition was not limited by «protecting» him. When studying early Soviet political practices it is important to consider that personification of politics was one of the most pragmatic tactics that legitimized oppositional activity.
