Abstract
The author discusses the relevance of foreign language learning in Russia in the period of political instability. Even though the relationships between Russia and the West have recently worsened, Russia continues to take part in crosscultural relationships, carries out international projects, and hosts world cultural and educational events. Thus the study of foreign languages remains an important necessity for Russian people, while foreign language illiteracy may lead to negative implications. The author believes that any large-scale social and administrative measures, aimed at improving linguistic competence of Russian population in today’s reality will not be spontaneous or chaotic, but will be systematic and planned for the long prospective. These measures should be addressed to the life-long needs of the language learner, should be socially effective in the long run and officially become a part of the federal educational policy in the future.
