Abstract
The article is devoted to the tasks and results of reforming the school education system in the 1990s. They became the subject of discussion at the meeting of a group of experts, which was held in January 2024 at the Saint Petersburg branch of the Higher School of Economics. The participants of the discussion are specialists who took part in management decision-making in the 1990s and in the first decade of the 21st century at the federal and/or regional level. They identified different situations of choice that inevitably arise in the education system at any level in conditions when there is a need to reform it.
