Abstract

Objective of the study is to reveal the role of professional sports in the lives of a social youth group and analyze the perceptions of young individuals about the social institution of professional sports.   The methodological basis of the research is relying on empirical survey data collected through mass questionnaires among individuals aged 18 to 30 in Rostov-on-Don.   Research results. Professional sports are an institution that holds significant informational influence in modern society. This influence is particularly pronounced among the youth as a group that is in the process of acquiring social norms and values. The majority of the social youth group members show interest in sporting events as products created by professional sports. The research revealed that demographic characteristics such as gender, age, and socioeconomic status determine the interest of young individuals in professional sports. In the perceptions of the youth, non-material values predominate within professional sports, grounded in the principles of fair play, which contributes to a positive image of this social institution in society. Survey results demonstrated that professional sports serve an integrative function within the youth environment by stimulating communicative practices both at interpersonal and group levels. Furthermore, it has been determined that in the views of the youth, professional sports are a promising field of employment that provides opportunities for individual self-realization, regardless of their social status.   Prospects of the study. Based on the results obtained from the study, it can be concluded that professional sports hold a significant place in the consciousness of the younger generation. This fact underscores the necessity for further exploration of the functions of professional sports in the process of youth socialization.
