Abstract

Objective of the study. The problem of traditionalism in the context of consolidation practices in the South of Russia is formulated, the positions, opinions and approaches to its study available in the scientific literature are considered, conceptual tools adequate to the author's concept of the study of consolidation processes in the South Russian macroregion are proposed. The methodological basis of the research. The theoretical basis of the research is based on a set of approaches that have developed in the field of studying trends of traditionalization and archaization in multiethnic regions of Russian society, elements of spatial and institutional approaches to the study of regional aspects of consolidation practices. Empirical verification of traditionalism in the South of Russia was carried out on the basis of reference to secondary data obtained as a result of sociological surveys focused on the study of various models of social behavior of the population of this region in the coordinates of trends of neotraditionalization and archaization. Research results. The nature of consolidation practices in the South Russian macroregion is significantly influenced by the factor of neotraditionalism, which is potentially a powerful resource for unity and cohesion of the population. However, in practice this does not happen in the studied region for the reason that neotraditionalism in the regional communities of Southern Russia, especially in the republics of the North Caucasus, is very much intertwined with the process of archaization as an expression of the spontaneous reaction of the population to the challenges of modern reality, its crises and rapid changes. Such a mechanism, combining archaic and neotraditionalist tendencies in the development of Southern Russian society, allows individual ethnic groups and communities to adapt quite effectively to the changing, uncertain and crisis reality, but does not form a stable platform and resource base for consolidation practices. As a result, the development of the South of Russia, especially in the republics of the North Caucasus and the Southern Federal District with a strong ethno-cultural cluster, does not meet the performance indicators that are associated with indicators of innovative development. Adaptive practices that took place in the past are quite effectively taking root in the regions of Southern Russia, as they fit into the logic of an inertial development strategy characteristic of the whole of Russia. Prospects of the study are seen in the actualization of the ethnocultural features of the development of regional communities in the South of Russia in the context of determining the optimal trajectories of innovative development in accordance with the challenges of the modern era and the acute social problems facing Russian society. At the same time, it is important to understand that inertial forms of adaptation as the most understandable and predictable can act as a barrier to the transition to innovation in various spheres of public life of a multiethnic regional society.
