Abstract
The article is devoted to a historical phenomenon that takes on a special meaning in the year of the 450th anniversary of the service of the Russian Cossacks and the 75th anniversary of Victory in World War II. Based on historical sources and personal memoirs, the article tells that two members of the same Don family received European recognition for their exploits. More than 130 years have passed between these events.
