Abstract
The article reveals some features of the North Caucasian mentality that affect the general, cognitive and economic culture of people. It is noted that despite the importance of the Islamic factor for the specification of cultural and cognitive characteristics of Caucasians, its influence should not be absolutized. It is shown that many components of the socio-cultural and cognitive code of the population of the region were formed long before the Islamization of the region, which was painful, contradictory and in different periods of social development. This also applies to the formation of the main mechanisms of economic activity, which, unlike the spheres of everyday life, family and household relations, education and upbringing, ritual and symbolic components of culture, more susceptible to Islamic influence, are quite autonomous and independent of the confessional factor
