Abstract
In the context of globalization, qualitative and ambiguous transformations of national and ethnic identity occurs. National character is a form of national identity and the subject of self-awareness of national identity. The article analyzes the structure and properties of a national character, as a culturally-conditioned complex that determines the originality of the national psyche. As a form of national identity, a national character is a national psyche, or psychology, determined by the culture of a particular nation. As a subject of national identity, national character exists at two levels: 1) at the level of social psychology - in the form of non-reflective vague everyday mass stereotypes and ideas of the people about their own national character; 2) at the level of social ideology - in the form of reflective theoretical or ideological concepts of a national character. The overall set of characteristics of the national psyche is divided into two groups of qualities: 1) cognitive-orientational qualities; 2) emotional-behavioral qualities.
