Individualism and Modal Patterns of Social Behavior in Russian Society

Abstract

The article discusses Western and Russian types of individualism, as well as various modal individualistic patterns of behavior in contemporary Russian society. The authors come to the conclusion that in modern Russian society the liberal individualistic model of conduct adheres to a small number of Russians. In the result of modernization reforms in Russia and conservative wave that swept the Russian society at the turn of the century, liberal-statist and statist-liberal model of social behavior became dominant, in which the realization of the individualism values is associated with a strong Russian state, and statist-paternalistic values of Russian conservatism «coexist» with some values of the Russian and the Western types of individualism.
