Abstract
The article analyzes the essence («the quiddity») of the Russian nation. The difficulties in the use of modern cultural and historical context of the historical experience of nation-building in the USSR. It is concluded that the search for new ways of spiritual unity of the modern Russian people is a necessary condition for the formation of the Russian nation.
