Abstract

Objective of the study is: to identify the nature of the ideas of democracy of the inhabitants of a large city through their (residents') assessment of the proximity to them of the socio-political life of foreign countries. The methodological basis of the research was the methodology described by B.A. Grushin in the book "Four Lives of Russia in the mirror of Public Opinion Polls". The methodology consists in the fact that during the survey the respondent determined the proximity of the socio-political life of a foreign country to his ideas about democracy; that is, the ideas about democracy correlated with the ideas about the socio-political life of foreign countries, and the respondent named one country closest to his ideas about democracy. Thus, ideas about democracy were revealed not directly (specific characteristics), but through association with a particular foreign country. Research result. The following results were obtained: 1) the dominant trend was the difficulty with the response of the majority of respondents, which indicates that for the majority there is no country that was close to the ideas of democracy in its socio-political life; 2) these countries do not form any one large group of respondents, orientations towards specific countries are very heterogeneous; and the diversity of countries and their specificity of one in relation to the other allows us to speak about a high degree of heterogeneity of the respondents' ideas about democracy; 3) the general trend is that most of the countries with the highest percentage are European, despite the fact that relations between Russia and most European countries are currently characterized by tension. Prospects of the study. The results of the study can be used in the framework of research on the views of Russians on the socio-political structure of Russia.
