Abstract

The actualization of the sociological aspect of the study of adaptation is examined in this article in reference to the qualitative change of status of the phenomenon of uncertainty: it is becoming an attributive quality of everyday life which requires ordering, the mechanism of which is adaptive behavior. Of particular relevance to this research is the study of adaptive resources and the practices of various categories of the population, which are constructed be them to lessen vulnerability in uncertain conditions. The main aim of the article is to uncover a range of adaptive characteristics among young people towards various parts of the university microenvironment during a period of modernization for institutes of higher learning as microenvironments. A range of the components of students’ adaptive potential is analyzed: 1) accumulating resources; 2) communication skills and experience; 3) life strategy – the selection of goals through professional self-determination; interaction with problems; the creation of living conditions; value systems. A comparative analysis is performed on two groups of respondents, whose self-evaluations of adaptive abilities displayed a positive trend. A summary of the analysis conducted can be made along two lines: methodic and substantive. The methodic conclusion comprises confirmation of the productiveness of the analysis of the positions of the target groups. The substantive findings can be stated thus: whatever the factors depended on for the self-evaluation of adaptive skills, they are related to the markers constructed by us and the values of their empirical indicators. It does not seem possible to conclusively identify the trend of this connection, but some tendencies are noticeable. Going by accumulated resources and communicative skills and experience it is possible to state that it is these specific factors that govern the self-evaluation of respondents’ adaptive abilities in a new environment. Going by life strategies, a dependence can be observed between the significant number of markers of the formation of a personal life strategy to the ability to adapt to uncertain situations under conditions marked by an increase in environmental risks. One more substantial finding is related to the trends reformation of systems of Russian higher education. The range of differences uncovered between the target group allows us to state that the formation of competencies, referred to by professionals as employability, under conditions of institutional uncertainty are defined to a significant degree by subjective evaluations of the ability to adapt to a new environment.
