Abstract

The priorities of modernization and innovative development should not obscure the existential significance of traditions as another, no less important aspect of social life. The focus of the article is the correlation of traditions and innovations, considered in relation to the paradoxical situation of our time, with its striking contrast between the impressive technological and economic achievements of civilization, which open up unprecedented opportunities for creating decent living conditions for all. The flip side ofthese achievements — global risks and Threats to humanity. In this situation, traditions as a social mechanism for transferring the life experience of many generations accumulated in them, including the experience of adaptation to changes, perform a stabilizing function. Conscious or intuitive resistance to the onslaught of global market forces and extreme individualism finds support in the traditional values of national cultures, religion, family, human solidarity. Thanks to cultural traditions, there is the possibility of continuity and sustainability of social reproduction. Adhering to the historical sociological approach, it is necessary to take into account differences in the role of traditions at different historical stages, different understanding of traditions in the context of different situations and ideological interpretations. Particular attention is paid to the interrelation of traditions and innovations in the political sphere, including in Russia.
