Abstract

Migration goes global. Migrants have different values, beliefs, norms of behavior and styles of communication. Without a period of adaptation to new conditions, they experience major difficulties, made worse by local population and government. “Migrational tension” is characteristic to many countries, including Russia. This paper looks into the problems of migration from the view of sociology and conflictology. The author believes that conflictogenity of relations between immigrants and the native community is directly related to the new structure of the Russian community that has developed in recent decades. The competition between social groups generates tension  and spikes of migrantophobia and xenophobia. In current conditions, as the author declares, the rather contradictory regulative role of the government requires assistance from community institutions, with their tolerant and multifaceted connections. In the paper, the author uses their own observations and expert surveys to analyze popular stereotypes of migrants as well. The author concludes that negative stereotyping correlates with emerging conflicts, with ethnic characteristics having a larger effect than the others.
